Liposuction Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tumescent Liposuction Painful?

There is minimal discomfort during the administration of the anesthetic. Prior to the start of the procedure you are given oral medication to relax and make you more comfortable. The procedure is basically painless and many patients compare it to a deep massage. The anesthetic effect usually lasts about 24 hours.

What Is Tumescent Anesthesia?

This is the fluid that is injected into the tissues to make it numb before the physician suctions out the fat. The solution is composed of several main ingredients – 1) saline – this makes the fat more liquid and easier to suction; 2) lidocaine – this temporarily numbs the nerves in the fat and skin so that you will not feel pain during suctioning; 3) epinephrine – this constricts blood vessels so there is minimal blood loss. The tumescent fluid also reduces pain after the procedure because it remains in the body approximately 24 hours.

Why Don't All Doctors Use Tumescent Liposuction If It Truly Is The Safest and Most Precise?

Each surgeon will have his/her answer to this question.

My surgical practice focuses solely on tumescent liposuction (body contouring, body sculpture) because it is safer and better for the patient. It takes twice as long to perform because the injection of anesthesia is done slowly to keep you comfortable and pain free, but for the patient, wanted results are achieved in the safest way possible.

Many physicians are not comfortable performing procedures on patients who are awake. Although there are many skilled physicians in the traditional techniques, this relatively new form of body contouring and body sculpting (and anesthesia) usually requires extra training.

How Much Fat Can Be Removed?

The same amount of fat as with traditional liposuction which is as much as 4 liters which in real world translates to about 8 pounds and in certain patients we can remove a little more.

Who Is A Good Candidate?

Men and women generally in good shape but have localized, resistant areas of fat are ideal for this procedure. It is also common to treat overweight patients. Patients need to have realistic
expectations that we will discuss in your consultation.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Any are of the body that has excess fat can be treated. The most common areas for women include the abdomen, waist, thighs, hips, buttocks, neck, arms and knees. In men, the most commonly treated areas include the "love handles," abdomen, breasts, neck and chin.

Will Fat Return?

Rest assured, once fat cells are removed, they do not grow back; however it is not possible to remove all fat cells.

The ones remaining may possibly expand slightly or more if you gain weight after the procedure. I always inform my 30ish aged patients losing weight and exercising without correct nutritional supplementation can create difficulties.

Optimal resistance exercise regimes with targeted high protein, low carbohydrate diets and hormonal balancing are keys to keeping the freshly sculpted body at its best for years to come.

Risk of Any Surgery

As with any procedure, tumescent liposuction, body sculpting and body contouring have certain common side effects such as bruising, swelling and temporary numbness. Although irregularities of the skin are possible following the procedure, it is minimized by using micro-cannulas.

Because of the slow resolution of post-surgical swelling, the ultimate results following tumescent liposuction and body contouring surgery may not become fully apparent for 12-24 weeks which is quite dependent upon the amount of fat needed to be removed.

In general the more fat we remove and the older the patient, the more nutritionally depleted, and the more that "invisible enemy" of hormone imbalance is plaguing you, the longer the recovery period will be.

Nevertheless, most patients usually see noticeable improvements within three to four weeks after the procedure. It is extremely important to note that with normal healing of the body, swelling, firm areas and irregularities may be noticeable for 6 months or more.

Everyone is different in terms of the body's ability to get back to baseline levels but I assure you if you follow my protocols you will have the body you are seeking in record time!

Lymphatic Drainage and Body Contouring

As with any surgical procedure, body contouring and tumescent liposuction will cause trauma to the tissues which results in inflammation, swelling and bruising.

This leads to a buildup of toxins in the tissues which the lymph system will be unable to drain properly that become evident in areas of irregularities, itching and loss of sensation.

The use of correct lymphatic drainage devices will stimulate more circulation to the surgical area. This will drain the lymphatic system thereby eliminating the built-up toxins post-operatively and will enhance the healing process by smoothing and tightening the skin.

You'll receive much better results and overall superior aesthetic results through supportive natural supplements that enhance the body's ability to heal itself as well as following the protocols outlined on my website for "optimal results after Liposuction."
